Floyd and Jesse Pope

Imagine preparing food and feeding up to 100 children.  As a parent of four it was often a major undertaking.  I can’t imagine feeding that many 3 meals a day.  Our kitchen staff was headed up by Floyd and Jesse Pope.  There were probably others but I only remember these brave men.  Not only did they provide us with sustenance but they always seemed to do so cheerfully.  They seemed to know each of us by name and would always have something pleasant to say.

  1. Do you remember Sister Mary Delores? She worked in the kitchen also. She was in my memory a frail woman but lots of backbone and determination. She worked right along Floyd and Jessie. At some point I remember one of my duties was working in the kitchen. She would be giving out orders right and left keeping us in line. I especially remember Floyd with his big smile and even bigger laugh.

  2. I lived at Nazareth, in the new orphanage across the street in the late 60's early 70's. Floyd was still cooking and Sister Mary Delores was still there. I remember Sister Mary Hildebrand as well along with the Novices and Father Rod. Being an only child it was a wonderful place for me having many "siblings" there to grow up with. Somewhere around here I have a couple of small booklet put out by us and the orphanage with stories and pictures of us.
I especially remember our different chores and being small making lunches for all the children in the morning before school, bag lunches of course. Then heading off to Cathedral to school..
Sometimes for punishment Sister Delores would give us something like a math problem.. something squared? I wish i could remember it. But all in all it was a good time of my life, seems I grew up a little too quickly with all the children.
Anyone remember Rosalie, she was working there, sort of a councelor. Ahhh.. memories..
Thank you for sharing. If I find those books I will scan and send to you.
